XML sitemap generator

Technical

Turn a list of URLs into a valid sitemap.xml with optional lastmod dates, duplicates removed and invalid lines flagged. Free, no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Paste your full URLs into the box, one per line.
  2. Keep Add a lastmod date checked and pick a date, or uncheck it to leave dates out.
  3. Copy the output or download sitemap.xml, then upload it and submit it in Search Console.

What a sitemap is for

An XML sitemap is a list of the URLs you want search engines to know about. It does not force anything into the index, but it helps crawlers discover pages, especially new pages, deep pages with few internal links, and pages on newer sites with few backlinks. For a small site with good navigation, a sitemap is a safety net. For a large or frequently updated site, it is a core part of how crawlers keep up.

This generator is built for small and medium sites, landing page sets, or quick fixes when a CMS does not produce a sitemap. Most modern platforms, including WordPress with an SEO plugin, Shopify and Webflow, create one automatically, and that is usually the better option because it updates itself.

Which URLs belong in it

Only include canonical, indexable URLs that return a 200 status. Leave out redirects, 404s, pages with a noindex tag, pages blocked in robots.txt, and parameter or filter variations that point to a different canonical. A sitemap full of URLs you do not want indexed sends mixed signals and makes Search Console reports harder to read.

Use the exact version of each URL that your site serves: the same protocol, the same www or non-www host, and the same trailing slash convention. The tool removes exact duplicates and skips lines that are not full URLs, and it reports how many it dropped.

Limits and lastmod

A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 50MB uncompressed. If you go past either limit, split the URLs into several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file. The tool warns you if your list is over 50,000 URLs.

The lastmod date tells crawlers when a page last changed meaningfully. Google has said it uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate, so do not set every page to today unless every page really changed today. If you are not sure, it is better to leave lastmod out than to guess. Google ignores the priority and changefreq fields, which is why this tool does not add them.

After you generate it

Upload the file to your site root so it lives at /sitemap.xml, then submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Add a Sitemap line to robots.txt as well; the robots.txt generator includes a field for it. A sitemap helps discovery, but strong internal links do more to show which pages matter. Our internal linking guide covers how to build them.

Questions, answered

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

Up to 50,000 URLs, and the file must be 50MB or less uncompressed. If your site has more, split the URLs across several sitemap files and create a sitemap index that lists them. You can then submit just the index file in Search Console and crawlers will find each child sitemap from there.

Should I include every page on my site?

No. Include only canonical pages you want in search results that return a 200 status. Leave out redirected URLs, error pages, noindexed pages, thin tag or filter pages, and anything blocked in robots.txt. A focused sitemap gives cleaner indexing reports and avoids sending crawlers to URLs you do not want shown.

Does adding a URL to a sitemap guarantee it gets indexed?

No. A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs, but whether a page is indexed depends on its quality, uniqueness, internal links and technical health. If submitted pages show as discovered or crawled but not indexed, the fix usually lies in the content or site structure rather than the sitemap itself.

Do I need priority and changefreq tags?

No. Google has stated it ignores both priority and changefreq, so this tool leaves them out to keep the file clean. The lastmod date is the one optional field worth including, and only when it reflects real content changes. Accurate lastmod values can help crawlers focus on pages that have actually been updated.
