How it may appear
How to use it
- Paste your meta description into the text box.
- Add your target keyword if you want it checked.
- Read the length meter, the preview and the list of checks.
What a meta description is for
The meta description is a short summary in the page's HTML head. It does not appear on the page itself, but Google often uses it as the gray text under your title in search results. It works like a small ad: it tells a searcher what they will get and why your page is worth opening.
Google has said the description is not a ranking factor. It still matters, because a clear and specific description can earn more clicks from the same position.
What this checker looks at
- Length. Descriptions commonly show around 155 to 160 characters on desktop before being cut off. The checker treats roughly 110 to 160 characters as a comfortable range and shows an estimated pixel width as well.
- Keyword. If you enter one, the checker confirms it appears. Google often bolds words that match the search, which helps your result stand out.
- Call to action. It looks for action words such as book, call, compare, get or schedule.
- Numbers. Prices, hours, counts and years give a snippet something concrete to anchor on.
- Repetition. Repeated long words usually mean wasted space.
- Double quotes. A double quote can end the HTML attribute early and cut your description short, so the tool warns you about it.
How to write a stronger description
Start with the answer to the search. Someone looking for "emergency dentist Austin" wants to know whether you can see them today, so say that first. Then add one detail that sets you apart, such as weekend hours, a service area or a free estimate. End with a clear next step.
Keep the most important message in the first 120 characters or so. If the end gets trimmed, the reader still gets the point. Write a unique description for every important page; copying one across many pages gives searchers no reason to pick a specific result.
When Google ignores your description
Google often writes its own snippet from page text when it thinks that text better matches a particular query. This is normal, especially for longer or more specific searches. You cannot fully control it, but a description that accurately reflects the page is more likely to be used. Check the full result with the SERP snippet preview, and if you want help across a whole site, our monthly SEO work covers snippets as part of ongoing page reviews.
Questions, answered
What is the ideal meta description length?
There is no single ideal, but most descriptions between roughly 110 and 160 characters display well on desktop. Google trims by pixel width, so wide letters fill the space sooner. Put your key message early, aim to use most of the available room, and do not stress over a few characters either way.
Why did Google replace my meta description?
Google generates its own snippet when it thinks other text on the page better answers a specific search. It may also do this when a description is missing, duplicated across pages or does not match the content. An accurate, page-specific description gives you the best chance of it being used.
Should every page have a meta description?
Every page you want people to find in search should have one. Prioritize pages that bring in visitors or leads, such as service pages, location pages and popular articles. Pages blocked from search or of little value to searchers, such as thank-you pages, do not need careful descriptions.
Can I use emojis or special characters?
You can, and Google sometimes shows them, but it may also strip them out. They rarely add much for service businesses and can look out of place. Plain words describing a clear benefit usually do more. Avoid double quotes inside the description because they can break the HTML attribute.
